Back to pharma, it could be argued that most or nearly all medicines are not the result of research but rather they go to the jungle and steal and extract the potent chemical of some plant. I guess that means that all these patents have prior art as the local people in that jungle already knew about the benefits of taken said plant, its only the big pharmaceutical that got all greedy and decided to charge for something they got for free. This sounds a lot like open source, where some companies bundle/repackage open source with some extras for mega bucks. Without the "free" start they would have nothing.
