I wonder how much this is an example of the British policy of mangnificant
isolation and so where they would make alliances that resulted in the status
quo remaining the same, avoiding any one power becoming too strong. Its not
so much the value gained from the alliance but rather that it keeps weaken
some competitors at the expense of improving the situation of others.
