Yeah they certainly seem to have a "remove the band-aid slowly and perhaps nobody will notice" strategy. Our own posse chief, Dick Wall, has gone all-in with Scala. It's thus not that hard to imagine a future where the runtime is irrelevant and we will just use whichever fits the best, and bundle it along with required libraries. Unfortunately for JSE, it failed to renew itself and remain attractive... Apple's issue is not really with Java [the language], but with the platform (runtime and particular the UI libraries). My prediction for the future is that desktop Java will continue to fade away much like applets have done [shameless plug, I investigated that issue a few years ago: http://goo.gl/wZ6V]. Apple not only recognizes this, they choose to take an active part (as they have with Flash). So either Oracle pours a ginourmous amount of cash into it, or the community shows remarkable synergy and determination. Or... we just move on. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "The Java Posse" group. To post to this group, send email to [email protected].
