Well, I can't talk for the experience - when I went to SF two months ago, via Munich, I wasn't neither through the backscatter, nor the pat down. I suppose they are a real annoyance. But I would be much more annoyed if a terrorist brought down my plane.

Given that, yes, flying is annoying today. In the past I've brought with myself a whole bag filled with my photo equipment. Now I can't (being the cost a problem before security, even though I had to expect about 5/10 minutes of detailed checks of my photo equipment. Under 1000 km for land-based travels I'm going to drive, taking some days and taking the advantage of some tourism. Next year I've decided not to submit anything to J1 (I'll eventually retry in 2012), one of the reasons being the annoyance and the cost of the flight.
