I don't think it is a measure of the PC platform itself as I would argue the situation was the other way around in the 90's with more variety on the PC platform than the consoles. The PC market share has fallen so much since then that the variety has also suffered. If there are less Triple A titles on a platform to begin with then the variety will tend to suffer.
What happened to the Flight / Space sim genre? I have a decent Joystick but the likes of X-Wing and Conflict Freespace seem to have died. There are still simulation games like The Sims / Sim City / Spore / The Themepark and Transport Tycoon series. The Sims is doing very well but others in that vein are not doing so well. These simulations tend to be easier to play on a PC as a Mouse is usually easier / more precise to use for selection than a game controller. There also seems to be less variety in general in the whole Games industry. The cost is high and companies don't want to take risks. If something is selling well then publishers tend to keep churning out more of the same. So many games are now just version increments of already successful games. Plenty of FPS saturation in the console space. Back in the day the PS One seemed to have a lot of old PC games converted and dumped on it and then marketed as "A new game for the Play Station". I could go on but I won't. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "The Java Posse" group. To post to this group, send email to [email protected].
