My original comparison of Iphone v Android == Mac v Intel is similar because on the one hand Apple wanted to control everything, from manufacturing, selling and keeping their os only for their hardware. Windows grew primarily because MS let anyone build the machines while they concentrated on Windows. While we now use open in a different way, Windows is more open from the perspective anyone can write and sell it anyway they wish. Today this is simply not true of Apple - with ITunes being the only way to for software to be sold after being "checked" by Apple. I wonder if in a few years time, we will say yes Apple screwed up they repeated the mistakes of the MAC on iOS. It can already be seen today that Android is surpassing the Iphone in numbers activated. Its only because everyone today has a phone and there are literally billions of people on the planet that any sales figure in this market will be a large number even for a nobody.
