There are Java desktop applications you won't have heard of that have quite
a user base.  They won't appear on Twitter or Facebook, and won't win any
awards for appearance.

Next time you're on an aeroplane, the pilots could easily be using a Java
desktop program to monitor the onboard cameras.
Next time you trigger a silent alarm by 'accidentally' walking down
someone's garden path at night instead of the footpath next to it it could
be someone operating a Java desktop program that sees you and calls the
police.
Next time there's a break-in and you want to retrieve CCTV footage from the
time of the event you could be using a Java program to do so.

And that's just some of the software I work on.  I'm sure others on this
list could add to that easily.
