Git has a simpler underlying representation, meaning that once you grasp it virtually everything becomes easy and starts to make sense.
And where it doesn't make sense to you, because the innards are simple, it is not difficult to write your own syntax layer. That said, I haven't learned hg's innards so probably I shouldn't comment.
