Maybe Android as a library for OpenJDK ?
That's effectively what they are trying to do no? Replacing Dalvik's
native ties (to Linux core libraries, glibc etc.) and delegating to
JDK API's instead. I can see how this can render the Java trademark
issue moot, but... does hosting Dalvik on OpenJDK provide enough
protection from patent litigation?
I suppose that IcedRobot could be a good probe to test a couple of
things: 1) whether OpenJDK is effective in an Android environment, thus
demonstrating whether the choice of Dalvik was needed for technical
reasons, or only for political reasons 2) whether the OpenJDK provides
enough protection against patents, even though it's difficult to say
whether the thing will really grab the attention of Oracle. Probably not
before a relatively long time, and I suppose that in the meantime the
Oracle vs Google lawsuit has come to an end.
Furthermore, one could be curious on why this approach wasn't
implemented at industrial level by any major company. Maybe IcedRobot
might become palatable for companies such as Facebook that are going to
do Android-based developments and could found themselves forced to pay
royalties to Oracle. Who knowz... maybe Mario Torre & al. have thought
at a marketing scenario for the thing? ;-)
The only thing that puzzles me is that this is a huge task, 6 developers
(even though talented) could be not enough and they are setting even
ambitious goals (such as GNUDroid + GNUBishop, that would be even an
Android extension). I suppose they're going to focus efforts initially
on the GNUDroid part.
