No, sir, you are wrong. My current project at work uses no XML for wiring. I also have a Grails project and that uses a Groovy DSL for wiring.
I can only assume you are working on some legacy application using an earlier version which used XML. I've been working with Spring apps for years and its not been an issue. I'm not saying that there aren't apps that require maximum performance and Spring won't be fast enough but I'm saying that most webapps, its good enough.
