Hi Patricia,

For some reason on some computers with Word 2000 and JAWS 9, Winword.exe is
running as a process. You need to end the process for Winword.exe in the
Task Manager and then try to delete the normal.dot file.

If using XP then press Alt-CTRL-delete. On some computers the keystroke
will open up the Task Manager directly, on others it will bring up a dialog
box in which you can use tab key to move to the task manager button and
press spacebar or enter key. If you are using Vista then bring up the task
manager with CTRL-Shift-Escape. When the task manager opens move to the
processes page using CTRL-tab or by pressing tab key until you get to the
page tabs and then right or left arrow key to move to the processes page.
In the processes page use tab key until you get to a list of running
processes. Use up and down arrow keys in the list until you find
Winword.EXE and then use tab key to move to the "end process" button and
press the spacebar. Check the list for any occurrence of Winword.EXE and
end the process. Close task manager using Alt-f4. Try to delete the
normal.dot file after stopping the process.

You might be having a problem that won't be resolved by doing the above but
it is worth a try. The message you were getting about the program not being
able to read memory could indicate other corrupted or missing files. If you
haven't done a "detect and repair" then I suggest you try it. Do you have
the original Office 2000 CD? I know that Word 2000 had some service packs
released so if Microsoft is still supporting Word 2000 you might check to
see if you have the latest service pack for that version of the program.

Take care. I wish you the best!

 Brian Lee
