I have used laptops and JAWS for over 10 years. In JAWS I set my laptop keyboard to Desktop, and just use the embedded Numpad. Yes, this means that I have to add the laptop's Function key to the command key combinations, but I haven't found that to be a problem for me. Since I have to move between laptops and desktop computers, I find that working in desktop keyboard mode works best for me.
