Subject: [JAWS-Users] One Version of Jaws Starting, but Not The Other

Hi Folks,

I've got a bit of a doozy for you.

I am running Windows XP home edition and Jaws 7.0.

I have just installed Jaws 9.0 and have found, to my dismay, that Jaws 7 works, but not Jaws 9.

Incredibly, this is the case, whether I have Jaws 9 to start automatically or not.

I set Jaws 7 to not start up when Windows starts, then turned off Jaws.

When I went to start up Jaws 9 to redo the start settings in the basic options, I found that it didn't want to start.

I tried to bring up Narrator, and it came up, so I knew it couldn't be a sound card problem, but when I went to change screens to read any error messages that might have popped up when I started Jaws 9, it would not change.

Narrator would simply repeat any keystrokes I pressed, and even then, it would only say one keystroke, even though I pressed two of them.

For example, if I pressed alt+tab, Narrator would only say alt, and if I tried to bring the desktop into focus with windows key+M, Jaws would only say Start. I couldn't even bring up the start menu.

After many times of re-starting my computer, I decided to bring up Narrator first, as I did not know that Jaws 7 would work if I started it first, and it worked fine, I was able to go to the desktop and all that stuff one would expect to do with Narrator, so I decided to take a chance and start Jaws 9.0 and suddenly, I lost focus of everything.

I managed to do a read window command with Narrator and it did read me a portion of a dialog box that said Application File for Jaws, followed by For help, press F1.

I could not get it to read anything else, I couldn't alternate between windows or dialog boxes and I couldn't access the start menu again for my life.

Suffice it to say, I did a hard reboot, and decided to take my chances with Jaws 7, and lo and behold, it works just fine.

I can't access the menu for Jaws 9, and even if I could, I doubt it would come up working, and I'd have my same problem again.

Can anyone give me some advice?

Am I getting shafted here without knowing it?

I'm thinking video intercept error, but I don't think I would get an application file for Jaws error dialog box, but I haven't encountered this very often.

I should point out that the install is a bonafide Freedom Scientific disc, not a download, right along with the authorization CD and the Real Speak voices.

I'm lost here folks, and I don't know what to do.

Please help.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
