Hi Joe, Just to add to what Jack is saying, I've noticed that some external drives are formatted incorrectly as FAT32, when they should be formatted as NTFS.
When your friend formats the drive, make sure he specifies NTFS and not FAT32, otherwise he may find the drive crashing at some point. Oh, and for the first time you format it, I would do a complete format, not a quick format, as that will only erase what is on the drive. True, it will take you longer to accomplish the format, but it's always safer to be thorough, than not being thorough enough.
