Hi Vicki,

Unfortunately, if built-in styles have been used in the document then not just the font and size attributes will be affected. Left alignment is part of the normal style. Even if you modify the normal style for the current document or create a new style, the choices for alignment are still left, right, centered or justify. In modifying or creating a new style, I can't find any option for excluding the alignment attribute. A style is made up of specific attributes such as font type, font name, font size, text alignment, and other attributes. When you change a style then you are choosing to change to all the given attributes. However, if you select everything in the document and then just change the things that you want as uniform such as font type and font size then you shouldn't lose such things as indentation or tabs.

Also, the keystroke I gave in the last message of Alt+CTRL+N changes to normal view not normal style as I thought. It had been a long time since I used the keystroke and obviously I didn't remember its function correctly.

Again, if you want to leave certain attributes of styles used and change others then you should not use a uniform style. For example, if you use CTRL+D to bring up the font list, just choosing the font you want to be uniform and pressing enter will work. If you want everything at 12 point then pressing CTRL+shift+P will take focus right to the point sizes where you can make your choice. Of course, the changes will affect either what you have selected or what you type after making the changes, but such things as indentation and tabs shouldn't be affected.

If you would like to discuss this further off list then feel free to write me at my Email address shown below.

Take care.

This won't affect other things Will it? For example, the line spacing,
indentations for paragraphs, centered text, etc. I just need to know what to
expect. If it takes everything away, then I'll need to reformat all the
other font and paragraph settings too. Thanks.

Hi Vicki,

I don't remember your original post so I am not sure which version of Word
you are using. If you are using Word 2003 then you can select all text by
using CTRL+A. After selecting all text, use Alt+CTRL+N to change all text
to the normal style. If you have NVDA on your computer then that keystroke might not work. If the keystroke doesn't work then after selecting all text
use CTRL+shift+S to bring up the combo box containing the styles. You can
use up or down arrow keys in the list of styles until you find the normal
style choice and then press enter key. You can also use up arrow in the
combo box to the top of the list of styles and use the clear all formatting
to change all the text to the normal style. If you find that up and down
arrow keys don't work right then use Alt+down arrow to force the combo box
to open and use the up and down arrow keys to the normal style choice or the
clear all formats choice.

If you are using Word 2007 then press Alt key followed by H followed by E to
clear all formatting after you have selected all text. You can also press
Alt+CTRL+shift+S or use Alt followed by H followed by F followed by Y to
open the styles pane. The first button in focus should be the clear all
button so press enter key to perform the clear all function. You might need
to use F6 to move to the styles pane to close it after clearing all
formatting. After using F6 to move to the styles pane, use CTRL+spacebar
and then use down arrow to the close choice and press enter key.

Take care.

Thanks, but I've done all that. This has to do with style, which is
somewhere else, and that action doesn't work there for some reason. I'm
trying to learn about the styles, but nothing I've found so far is helping
in how to change the style in the document to a uniform formatted style.
It's weird. Thanks again.

What I have done in situations like this is to select all (CTRL-A. Then go
to format ALT-O, you have several options here, you can format everything
to
a specific font and size in the font selection, use the paragraph
selection
to set paragraph formatting and so on.

Hope this helps and speeds things up for you.

I've run into a problem with formatting my friend's manuscript. The
paragraphs are all formatted in various styles, block text, indented,
normal, etc. I read the help file on styles and formatting, but can't
seem
to get JAWS to read what I need so I can figure out how to place all the
text in the document in the same style. If anyone would be willing to
e-mail
me off-list with some help, I would appreciate it. I'm using Word 2003
and
JAWS 9. Thanks.

Vicki
