Wel,, if you installed JAWS10 or 11 beta, I hope that the ctrl-alt-j
keyboard shortcut wouldn't be automatically assigned to it. Also, did
you do an automatic install or a custom install? (I prefer custom, or
whatever it is called; so that i can modify speech synthesizer and
braille display choices, etc. I have four versions of JAWS on here,
just one of which has the ctrl-alt-j keyboard shortcut (and that was
assigned by me, not the CD). HotKey Detective is useful; but you don't
need it to tell you which keyboard shortcut you have assigned to a
version of JAWS. All you need do is enter the properties of (for
example) the desktop icon for that version of JAWS, with alt+enter, then
tab a few times. if there is a shortcut key combo in the edit field,
JAWS will speak it, "shortcut key ..." and if there is none, JAWS says,
"none". When i completely removed JAWS10 at one time, I then installed
JAWS10 from the CD. there was no shortcut key automatically filled in,
and that was what i wanted. i assigned ctrl-alt-0 to it. perhaps one
of your JAWS shortcut keys is assigned to your JAWS elsewhere than in
the properties of the desktop icon.

At least for Jaws 8 and 9, the shortcut key Alt-Control-J is
automatically assigned if JAWS is installed from the CD. This is not
the case if JAWS is downloaded from the FS web site. I actually have
two shortcut keys assigned to my default version of JAWS, which
happens to be JAWS 9: Alt-Control-J which was assigned automatically
when JAWS 9 was installed, and Alt-Control-9, which I assigned myself.
both shortcut keys launch JAWS 9. You can verify which shortcut keys
are pre-assigned and which are user assigned by installing a little
utility called Hot Key Detective, which can be downloaded from the
JAWS Users programs page. Hot keys labeled as "common" are
automatically assigned when the program is installed. Hot keys
labeled as "personal" are user assigned. BTW, the terms"shortcut key"
and "hot key" are synonomous.

Sorry, I don't think the shortcut key is automatically set if you
install JAWS from the CD. If it were, and you already had ctrl-alt-j
set for another version of JAWS, since you can indeed have more than
one version of JAWS on any one computer, confusion would be the
inevitable result. I always must manually set the shortcut key.
When i've checked, beforehand there was no shortcut ctrl-alt-j
automatically filled in.

If you installed JAWS from the CD, it is automatically assigned the
shortcut key Alt-Control-J. If this keystroke combination doesn't
work for you, you can create your own JAWS shortcut key by following
these steps:
1. Launch the Desktop by pressing Windows key-M.
2. Press J repeatedly until you land on the JAWS icon.
3. Press Alt-Enter to bring up the JAWS Properties page.
4. Tab to the Shortcut key field, and type in the shortcut key
combination of your choice, like Alt-Control-J or whatever other
combination you prefer.
5. Tab to Apply button, hit Space, then tab around again to the Okay
button and hit Space. That's it. Now, when you press Alt-Control-J
or whatever shortcut key you assigned, JAWS will be launched. HTH.

Do you know how I can make one?
