I go back to JAWS3.0, and this has also always been my experience. Perhaps the j key is underlined by HotKey Detective, for JAWS, and it may be automatically assuming things that probably should work but don't.

I have been using JAWS since version 3.7, and have never had
CONTROL-ALT-J or any other hot key bring up JAWS unless I set it up
myself. And whenever I install a new version of JAWS, and if I choose to
keep the previous version, I always go into the properties for the
shortcut for that version and delete the hot key. Perhaps you are
thinking of Window Eyes, which installs the hot key CONTROL-ALT-W
automatically. In this situation, there is no danger of competing
versions because Window Eyes installs new versions over old ones unless
you choose to install to a different directory.

Which version of JAWS gets activated when you press ctrl-alt-j (on your
computer)? (this isn't a redundant question: You're allowed to have
multiple different versions of JAWS on your same computer.) I have both

JAWS8 and JAWS9 on mine, and neither of them gets activated when i press

the ctrl-alt-j keystroke. Nor did i want that. I think i may have had
JAWS6.2 with ctrl-alt-j on this computer; but I removed that version.
So perhaps I'll give JAWS11 a try and see if ctrl-alt-j will
automatically take, or whether I'll need to input it. if a shortcut key

is already used, it should not be allowed to be used for a different
program or different version of a program. I know that several programs

come with their own pre-packaged shortcuts; but JAWS, until today, i
didn't reckon was one of them; and FS never said there was an already
existing JAWS keyboard shortcut. A desktop shortcut, yes; but you the
user needed to input your desired keystroke to make of it a keyboard
shortcut (AKA shortcut key). thus, the commonly repeated instructions
given here (by many, not just me), on the list over the past couple of
years on how to make keyboard shortcuts to start JAWS quickly.

At the risk of being redundant, I stand by my claim that installing
JAWS from the CD (at least for JAWS 8 and9) does, in fact,
automatically create the shortcut key Alt-Control-J. This shortcut
key cannot be accessed from the Properties page of the JAWS desktop
icon, and in fact, is almost impossible to delete accidentally,
because it is stored in a different file than the user-assigned
shortcut keys. Many programs automatically create shortcut keys when
they are installed, including MS Word (Alt-Control-W) and Open Book
(Alt-Control-O). The only easy way to determine the actual origin of
a particular shortcut key is to check it using a utility like Hot Key
Detective or Shortcut Key Explorer, both of which are available on the

JAWS Users programs page. You might even be surprised to discover that

you have "hidden" shortcut keys on your computer that you didn't
realize existed.

The JAWS install does not automatically create a shortcut hot key.
The
desktop shortcut is created, but no hot key. You need to do this
yourself as described below. The only thing that I have found is
that
if you do this using JAWS, the hot key wil not stick. The only way I
have been able to do this for JAWS is to do it using another screen
reader.

If you installed JAWS from the CD, it is automatically assigned the
shortcut
key Alt-Control-J. If this keystroke combination doesn't work for
you,
you
can create your own JAWS shortcut key by following these steps:
1. Launch the Desktop by pressing Windows key-M.
2. Press J repeatedly until you land on the JAWS icon.
3. Press Alt-Enter to bring up the JAWS Properties page.
4. Tab to the Shortcut key field, and type in the shortcut key
combination
of your choice, like Alt-Control-J or whatever other combination you
prefer.
5. Tab to Apply button, hit Space, then tab around again to the Okay
button
and hit Space. That's it. Now, when you press Alt-Control-J or
whatever
shortcut key you assigned, JAWS will be launched. HTH.

Do you know how I can make one?
