I have been using JAWS since version 3.7, and have never had
CONTROL-ALT-J or any other hot key bring up JAWS unless I set it up
myself. And whenever I install a new version of JAWS, and if I choose to
keep the previous version, I always go into the properties for the
shortcut for that version and delete the hot key. Perhaps you are
thinking of Window Eyes, which installs the hot key CONTROL-ALT-W
automatically. In this situation, there is no danger of competing
versions because Window Eyes installs new versions over old ones unless
you choose to install to a different directory.

Which version of JAWS gets activated when you press ctrl-alt-j (on your
computer)? (this isn't a redundant question: You're allowed to have
multiple different versions of JAWS on your same computer.) I have both

JAWS8 and JAWS9 on mine, and neither of them gets activated when i press

the ctrl-alt-j keystroke. Nor did i want that. I think i may have had
JAWS6.2 with ctrl-alt-j on this computer; but I removed that version.
So perhaps I'll give JAWS11 a try and see if ctrl-alt-j will
automatically take, or whether I'll need to input it. if a shortcut key

is already used, it should not be allowed to be used for a different
program or different version of a program. I know that several programs

come with their own pre-packaged shortcuts; but JAWS, until today, i
didn't reckon was one of them; and FS never said there was an already
existing JAWS keyboard shortcut. A desktop shortcut, yes; but you the
user needed to input your desired keystroke to make of it a keyboard
shortcut (AKA shortcut key). thus, the commonly repeated instructions
given here (by many, not just me), on the list over the past couple of
years on how to make keyboard shortcuts to start JAWS quickly.
