I have used both a stand alone and now use a multi-function unit. I have always been a HP user with computers and peripherals but I use a Lex Mark multi-function unit 5600 now and it works flawlessly. When you get a multi-function unit it comes with several software programs and I fine that you need only to install the installation disc for it to do the task that you need for scanning text. All the other software is for creating cards and banners and the like and usually isn't Jaws friendly and has nothing to do with using Open Book and Kurzweil. Hope this helps, Steve.

Can anyone provide info on some models to look for and which to avoid for
the above? I've heard some folks say to avoid multi-functions altogether
but others seem to think the combination works- so would very much
appreciate any direct experience or advice. Thanks.

Cher
