John, what you say is partially! correct. Basically, the voices that you
got on your CD rom that came with jaws 8.0 are Sapi5. They are *not!* the
Solo direct voices. there is a difference. The Solo Direct voices use
their own propriatary driver, that only will work in FS products like JFW,
or Openbook. These voices unfortunately, though I don't know why, are not
64 bit compliant. On the contrast however, the solo direct voices are what
you would download from the FS web site. They are continually being
supported, and thus, they most definitely will work as they are fully 64 bit
ready.
The only drawback to the Solo Direct voices is that should you wish to use
them in any non-fs based application, it's not going to work.
There are lots of sapi5 based voices however that are 64 bit, and don't
sound terribly bad. For example, Accappella Telecom makes some darn good
voices. The voices that comes with Vista and with Windows 7 isn't terribly
bad... MS Anna. she's not great, but she's tolerable. She's way better
than ms Sam, I'll sure as hell tell you that! Another fav of mine is the
Next-Up AT&T Labs Natural voices Mike and Crystal. Also the Cepstral voices
supposedly! work in 64 bit environments, although I've never tested this to
confirm it. I don't see why they wouldn't though.
Anyway, I hope this clears up some ever so slight mis-understanding.
No hard feelings. just wanted to clarify.
Thanks.
Chris.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] REAL SPEAK SOLO VOICES AND JAWS IN A 64 BIT SYSTEM
I believe that I can iron out some of these wrinkles a bit. I had all of
the voices offered by Freedom Scientific in a folder which I transferred
from my 32 bit laptop to my new 64 bit desktop system. None of the voices
would work. I received a warning indicating that these programs would not
operate in a 64 bit environment. However, I did find that if I downloaded
the voices from Freedom Scientific again, they would work just as well in
my
64 bit system as they did in the 32 bit laptop. I don't really know the
logistics of this situation and I am certainly no computer geek. But
based
on personal experience, apparently the Real Speak solo voices will work if
you go to the web site and download them individually. My only conclusion
is that those voices have to be configured for either 32 or 64 bit systems
when they are downloaded.
WARNING! SYSTEM RESTORE!
If you find it necessary to execute a System Restore, you may find that
the
Real Speak Solo Voices, although they appear to be in the system, do not
work. You have to re-install them again from the web site.
Now, I hope I haven't confused anyone even more.
