I don't know if this will help since I run Outlook Express but, if I go into 
Tools / Options / Read Page, and tab down the Read Page once or twice there 
is an option, " Automatically expand grouped messages ."  If this check box 
is checked Jaws will automatically expand messages and that is a possibility 
as to why you are not hearing " collapsed ."  Or, maybe Windows Live Mail 
has something equivalent to the " Automatically expand grouped messages " 
option that you can change.  Hope this helps.  Take care.

to clarify, the conversation feature  actually works its just jaws won't say
the word collapsed for some reason.
