See (or hear) all those > [greater-than] signs in a thread, on by
default? They serve to indent the message and thereby point the way for
the glancer down to the 4th or 5th etc., reply in a thread.

It shouldn't be all that strange. I am sure there are lists that are
outliers, but proper Netiquette is to top-post because then you don't
have to scroll down to the bottom of a long exchange to see the newest
information. And, that's also why most email clients post the replies
by default on top.
