MSE for Windows XP is also owned/controlled ultimately by Microsoft, so
the reality is that they may do whatever they like with it after
tomorrow.

The reality is that MSE for XP will continue to be supported through
July, 2015, so even if the MSE icon in the System Tray reports your PC
status as potentially unprotected, MSE will nevertheless continue to
provide real-time protection and automatic database updates until
then. So there is no reason to switch to another anti-virus program
right away if you are satisfied with MSE. Shame on MS for engaging in
scare tactics to frighten XP users into upgrading to Windows 8.

If this is so, what are we to do for antifivirus protection, MSE?

It is being flagged as potentially unprotected because you are
running XP.
It is one way Microsoft is using to sarn/nudge/cajole/scare people
into
upgrading to a more current operating system, since as of Tuesday
they will
no longer be releasing patches for XP users.

did you get recent update for MSE through the window's update?
I had one for both win 7 systems, this was not in the optional
updates
list

Hmm, interesting. So is it possible that MSE is flagging my
computer as
potentially unprotected because I am running XP, support for which
ends on
Tuesday, even though support for the XP version of MSE will continue
until
July, 2015? Or is it because there is a harmful item in the
quarantined
items folder that I am unable to remove?

Hi Gerald,
You didn't say which version of Windows, so I'll take it you are
referring
to XP.
If you don't want to see that in the system tray anymore, you will
have to
uninstall MSE.
I've got the same thing here, and it due to a MSE update on XP
Additionally, I get a warning message from MSE when I boot the
computer,
and I don't understand since it will be supported in XP until next
year.
My solution here is to switch to Vipre Internet Security
HTH,
Rick Justice
Tomorrow's another day, another way!
and if tomorrow never comes, problem solved!

Subject: [JAWS-Users] MSE Flagging MY PC As Potentially Unprotected
Hi gang. For the past two days, the Microsoft Security Essentials
icon
in
the System Tray of my XP computer has been showing "PC Status
Potentially
Unprotected". Using the JAWS cursor to read the History tab, I
notice
that
there are options labeled "remove" and "remove all" at the bottom
of the
page , presumably to remove harmful items that have been
quarantined, but
when I attempt to click on either of these options with the left
mouse
button, nothing happens, and my PC status remains potentially
unprotected.
Neither running a full scan nor rebooting my computer changes the
status
to
protected. So how can I get MSE to change the status of my PC from
potentially unprotected to protected? Thanks for any help.
Gerald
