Would that be why one port on my computer does not work with almost anything I try to plug in there? It bongs but then the device never works. New computer HP as of last May.

They will be able to tell you which ports are USB 3.0 and which are 2.0. They will be grouped together, not intermixed. For instance, on a laptop, the 3.0 ports are usually on the left side of the computer when facing the screen, and the 2.0 ports are on the right side.
