I am beginning to wonder if something is wrong with this document.

I have followed your latest suggestions about setting up the continuous
reading option, but still no luck.

I think I Am going to have to get sighted assistance here to help me figure
out what might be going on.

You can set your adobe settings to continuous reading.  Control k gets you
to preferences.  Type r for reading.  Tab across for continuous reading.
Alternatively, you might want to set up your adobe to read even large
documents continuously.  If you have a fast computer, large docs open
quickly.  Alt e for edit then arrow down to accessibility.  
You have two options.  The set up assistant lets you select your reading
options.  I always use continuous reading, even for large docs.  A 20 page
doc is not so large as to be cumbersome.
