I've been a long-time Omnipage user but found version 19, AKA Ultimate,
an ultimate fail particularly with Word and Excel.
While Abbyy Fine Reader isn't as posh, it's a lot easier to use and
gives better responses in some areas and it integrates into Word / Excel
much better than ver 19 of Omnipage.
As an example I get better results scanning tables with FineReader than
omnipage.

Shoshana,
An OCR (Optical Character Recognition) package, would be something like
FineReader (that both Open Book and Kurzweil 1000 (specialized blindness
products) use. Open Book is developed by Freedom Scientific. It works
with JAWS, but is by itself voicing, so you don't need JAWS to run it.
For that reason, among others, it is expensive. (Same is true for
Kurzweil 1000, developed by Cambium Learning Systems.) Two good
'off-the-shelf' packages are: FineReader, and OmniPage. You can get
either one at around $200 or less, if there's a sale. F.R. and O.P. are
workable with JAWS, but the interface isn't always so optimal. There are
other OCR packages but these are the main ones in use. To scan paper,
you do of course need a physical scanner, be it with a printter or as a
standalone unit. The standalone scanners are usually the best. Not all
scanners are created equal, and not all of them will work with the
blindness packages.
I think that covers most things.

LOL, Flor ...turns out you were right the first time! They were basically
graphic PDF files, but I emailed the person who uploaded them, and he
got me
copies I'll be able to read. Since I will need the information for an
upcoming meeting, I am obliged to him (smile).
OK ...an OCR package? Could you explain a bit about that and make a
suggestion as to one I could get for my PC that is likely to work with JAWS
14? Thanks!
Shoshana
