Beg your pardon, I should have said Alt-I, R, Alt-I representing Insert.  The 
same thing will work for a new column, with a C instead of an R.

Ins-I, R should do it.  This will give you a brand new blank row, which is what 
I think you're wanting.  You can also do it through the Home tab.
