I wonder, if the HDMI port can be distinguished from a USB port by virtue of the fact that the HDMI port has the flat piece more towards the bottom of the port. (The flat piece in the USB port is or may be a bit higher up.) I'm looking at my Toshiba laptop and in the port with the flat piece towards the bottom, a USB plug won't fit.

Yes, absolutely. I cannot tell the difference between an HDMI port and a USB
2.0 port, but I am digitally-proficient enough to easily tell the difference
between a USB 2.0 port and a USB 3.0 port. Start using your finger on all
those ports and get back to us.

And, this is my issue. I thought I had understood someone to post that they
can tell the difference between a USB 2 and a USB 3 connector by touching
it.

Many times that will be the HDMI port. Without looking I could not say with
100% certainty, however, I have been around quite a few computers with
multiple USB ports and if there is a port that looks a lot like a USB port
it is usually an HDMI port.
For example, this machine I am typing on has two USB ports and an HDMI on
the left moving from front to back. And on the right is a single USB port.
I would need to ask someone sighted which one is blue. Smile!

No, they are the same shape. I think the USB 3 port may be labeled,
it should be blue in color according the recommended tech specs..

But, they have to be the same shape to maintain backward compatibility.

This laptop is to have two usb 2.0 and one 3.0 ports. Is the 3.0 port a
different shape? I need 3 usb devices for tonights meeting and only two
fit.
There is a port next to the two 2.0 ports that is a different shape.
