The pad is the cause but I have an HP laptop and it does not have a simple
toggle for turning on and off the mouse pad.  My Asus was very simple and
this may be my first and last HP computer.

that's good that you resolved the issue you were having.
I would think there would be a way to easily disable/enable the mouse pad.
this way you can enable it just when it is needed, unless you also use
screen magnification.
BTW, it is really referred to as a track pad, the mouse pad refers to those
pads you'd get to facilitate using an optical or ball mouse.
