Wayne, I have an HP laptop for work and have not been able to find any way to turn off the touchpad. I actually taped a piece of cardboard over the touchpad so I wouldn't keep touching it accidentally. Not exactly an elegant solution, but it works.
This is a huge drawback of HP laptops, imo, and the main reason I would never buy one for my personal use.
