If you want to have clients that are always sure to work with any J2EE
server *without preinstalling anything*, then IIOP is "needed".

I say "needed" since jBoss do not have IIOP support, but OTOH it does
not *force* you to preinstall anything.

You need to look at it from the containers point of view I'm afraid: the
server can use any protocol it wishes, as long as it can use IIOP *too*.
That's the basic rule.

First off, please say "J2EE RI" and not "J2EE". It is very confusing.

See above: a J2EE-compliant server *may* use protocols other than IIOP,
but it is not required. In the case of the J2EE RI it only supports
IIOP.
