My 2 cents...
I think possible "marketing" problems could be avoided if the core
developers of JBoss at Telkel continued to provide a similar level of free
support on the JBoss lists that is provided now. Akin to the model that
Borland follows for JBuilder Foundation. Borland has paid support options,
but provides pretty good support for free, as well. This model is
well-proven, and companies that want paid support with defined response
times, etc. will not be dissuaded from paying by the presence of free and
open mailing lists. Also, I expect that Telkel will be able to build a
strong business helping companies design and implement their
applications...not simply providing problem support. On the other hand, if
Telkel and the JBoss core developers cut their participation in the JBoss
mailing lists cold turkey, I think JBoss adoption will be severely
hurt...something I and many others would not wish to see happen. I
certainly support your need to make a living...even a very good
one. You've done great work and deserve to get compensated in kind. Just
suggesting to you that you not kill the goose before the eggs are
laid. Keep fostering this community with your free support...you all will
be at the top.
