... >haven't we evolved to have something better than ASCII text?!?!? ... >[let the FLAME WAR begin!!!] I had this online discussion about images in mathematical newsgroup-posts years ago with a newsgroup operator/visitor in East Germany (former GDR). He told me that they weren't even able to view the attached images - besides concerns about their size. And - now the "funny" part of it - that there are perfect programs available for converting a formula (e.g. in "Tex" notation) to an ASCII text construct ! Mobile internet users might intervene: If your PDA is not "perfectly" configured, you cannot view the attached image (even if it is something common like ".jpg"). A few days ago I couldn't show that "SHCOOL"<->"SCHOOL" joke (that currently is embedded as link in many advertising eMails from the U.S.) offline to my seminar customers , neither as .bmp nor as .jpg file : mobile IExplorer seemed not to be able to open the .jpg file directly, the UNICODE editor of my mobile "PocketC" IDE and one of the integrated WinCE editors didn't want to open or import a sample .htm file successfully to integrate an <img src="school.jpg"> line so that the browser could display the image. Finally - with the help of my desktop PC - the .htm file is extended and works. ( OK, somewhere and on one of those CDs lying around exists a WinCE image viewer , but obviously not when you need it and not on your own PDA ) sincerely, U.
