The biggest advantage to CLIPS/JESS for me is that I can easily embed JESS
inferencing capability into my Java (or C in the case of CLIPS) code. This
has made the creation of "intelligent" agents very straight forward.

|
|
| There is always a necessity for open-source implementations
| of technology
| like rule engines for the simple reason that if the
| technology is available
| and easily-accessible, people will play with it and learn. A complex
| technology like a rule engine will die if people don't
| actively utilize it.
|
| Jess is helping me, as well as countless others, learn about
| rule engines
| without having to go through the work to justify the expenditure of
| purchasing a rule engine. If I had to rely on what I read in
| books, I would
| never go through the effort of buying one. The risk is just too high.
|
| Even now, I am not sure I would buy a rule engine over using
| Jess. Open
| Source software is usually the highest-quality product
| available, even if it
| is not the most user-friendly. I am comforted by the fact
| that many, many
| people are using the software in different applications, and
| then publicly
| feeding back their experiences and knowledge into the
| community. Jess isn't
| technically Open Source, but it has the same spirit, which is
| where the
| value is for me.
|
| Jess isn't perfect, but it is well-supported and a low-risk technology
| choice. A commercial rule engine is always more risky given
| the existence
| of a freely available, viable alternative.
