There is always a necessity for open-source implementations of technology
like rule engines for the simple reason that if the technology is available
and easily-accessible, people will play with it and learn. A complex
technology like a rule engine will die if people don't actively utilize it.
Jess is helping me, as well as countless others, learn about rule engines
without having to go through the work to justify the expenditure of
purchasing a rule engine. If I had to rely on what I read in books, I would
never go through the effort of buying one. The risk is just too high.
Even now, I am not sure I would buy a rule engine over using Jess. Open
Source software is usually the highest-quality product available, even if it
is not the most user-friendly. I am comforted by the fact that many, many
people are using the software in different applications, and then publicly
feeding back their experiences and knowledge into the community. Jess isn't
technically Open Source, but it has the same spirit, which is where the
value is for me.
Jess isn't perfect, but it is well-supported and a low-risk technology
choice. A commercial rule engine is always more risky given the existence
of a freely available, viable alternative.
