Well, the first thing that comes into my mind:
Name one commercial expert system that
is as well supported as Jess ! Here u get bugfixes
at first hand and help from the author.

Futhermore, as Matt pointed out, Jess is available
in source code and free for personal use. Not really
common among the highly priced commercial expert systems.

Last but not least, Jess is more portable and scalable
than the commonly C-based commercial expert systems.
Machine too slow ? No problem, take a huge Sun Enterprise
server or an 8-way Intel Xeon server or an HP PA8000 or
whatever u like.

Subject: JESS: what is the need for JESS??

when there are so many commercial tools that make the
job of developing expert systems much easier, why is
there a need to develop the system using JESS??

Is it just a matter of cost?

Or is there any specific reason why people prefer
developing systems using Jess/Clips??

truly,
