The PortletController only organizes your content. If you run a Portlet
that generates remote links... then it will generate remote links...
I don't want to add functionality that doesn't allow people to access
the Internet. It would be like writing a feature into JServ that
doesn't allow people to use TCP.

The Jetspeed Portal infrastructure... at least the content syndication
features are all about remote content. Now when things like
iCalendar/Project are integrated it will be better for "disconnected"
use.
Things like Mail/iCalendar/Project are all great for inside the
firewall.
