OT: yes, the Core 2 Duos are MUCH faster, and it's not all about clock
speed. The Core 2 Duo is based on the older but better PIII
architecture - shorter pipelines, more work done per clock cycle, and
its modern grandpappy is the first Pentium M "Banias". The Core 2 Duos
have a lot more cache than the P4s as well.

I went from a P4 2.8 GHz to a Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4 GHz) and it's 4-5
times faster while consuming less power and running a -lot- cooler. A
no-brainer really. The EXX00s are discontinued now, the EXX50s are
even faster because they have a higher FSB (1333 MHz as opposed to 1066
MHz) and are cheaper for a given speed.

The brand-new Wolfdale (E8XXX) will be faster still, with even more
cache and even higher clock speeds.
