Differences between the beta hardware and the production hardware:

1. Unfortunately the wifi receiver isn't much more powerful. At my
player location, it dips to a SNR of 8. There doesn't seem to be much
difference from my beta controller, including the "bars" (I only get
the "nub" or the first bar at this location). But it does work fine.

2. The MAC address finally matches that printed on the inside of the
battery compartment. On my beta it didn't. An OUI lookup on the beta
came back to an Asian OEM, likely the wireless chip manufacturer.

3. No scroll wheel hitch, no screen distortion as others have noted.

4. The battery compartment is perfect. It was very difficult to open
the first time on my beta unit, on this one it is secure yet comes off
with hand pressure.

5. While the finish is nice, comparing the two units - it's wearing
quickly! Lots of buffing and scratches all over the back, including a
scuff line where the dock sits, and I'm very careful with my stuff!

Now software issues:

The instructions on the screen were confusing - after entering my SSID,
I pressed the centre button twice as instructed but that skipped over my
encryption selection so connecting failed after a long attempt. I then
had to forget the network so I could start over after powering down and
back up and the message was "Forgottoning Network" or some misspelling
like that.

When it connected to SC, it wanted to "Set Up Squeezebox" but the SBR
was already set up? The list was empty. I just pressed the > key and
got to the "Choose Player" screen where I could choose the SBR or my
Transporter, both of which were connected to SC.

Now, as I understand it, both those issues are related to a much older
firmware the production units ship with - r1156 or something, so these
issues have likely been resolved. The unit's at r1853 now and working
fine!

Finally, did anyone have to pay to receive their beta SBC, their SBR or
their production SBC? This time UPS charged me $6.54 (GST - Goods and
Services Tax) even though it was clearly listed as "Engineering Sample
- no commercial value". They assessed the $6.54 based on the $50
declared value. I do some shipping and I understand that you can't
ship anything with a $0 declared value though. I guess $6.54 isn't too
bad for a $299 device (heh) but did anyone else have to do it? I'm not
sure I can dispute it, the tax was assessed based on the declared value
- I'm not sure if the sample designation would change this.
