Normally purple indicates some kind of unrecoverable (i.e. hardware) fault.
However, it sounds like your SBR is otherwise functioning OK, so I think your assessment of a dodgy green element may be correct. Perhaps fluctuations in temperature are causing a poor solder joint to open and close.
