The Squeezebox Controller uses a fixed size cache for the album artwork, if the cache is full then artwork will be discarded. In r2097 a couple of artwork related memory leaks were fixed, and I also reduced the artwork cache size. The reduced cache is now over cautious while we perform some more testing. In a future release the artwork cache will be increased.
The suggestion of using the flash memory or an SD card to cache artwork has come up a few times, and this is something that is being considered. Ideally I'd like to speed up downloading artwork so that cache size is no longer an issue.
