It doesn't work on an audio signal, so you can't do this with the
normal RCA analogue outputs. The SB2/3 has a software-controllable
headphone output - it can either be used as a normal audio output for
headphones, or it can be configured to send IR Blaster signals. Felix
(who wrote the PowerSwitch plugin) used the IR Blaster capability to
simply output a fixed 3V DC, which can then be used as a signal that
the SB is switched on. This signal is typically used to control a relay
that activates ancilliary equipment (eg. an amplifier).

Seeing as this thread has been resurrected, I may as well point out
that I've found a solution to the issue of getting a signal out of the
Receiver to indicate when it's switched on. I posted in a thread over
on the DIY forum, but here's a link to the relevant details:
