I'm sure you've realized by now that you're not the only one
disappointed. Kind of surprised that it would have been removed when
they previously acknowledged the need for it and sold the IRBlaster
accessory.

I had been cheap and been using Softsqueeze on a number of computers
around the house and at work (via ssh) for a number of years. Wanted a
Sonos but couldn't rationalize the $$$ for it and just bought a duet a
few weekends ago. To have the ability to have an AMP powered up and
down with the squeezebox and have volume control directly go to the AMP
all via IR would have been very nice. I'm actually trolling Ebay to see
if I can pick up an old SB2 cheap (probably unlikely) and use it for
that and I'll use my SBR for somewhere else.

But I'm curious, previously someone took the audio output that was
coming out of the headphone jack and was able to use that for IR. Is
there something from a hardware perspective that prevents this from
happening on the SBR? I know there is no headphone output but it would
be very easy to get an adapter that converts the RCA L/R plugs to the
3.5mm headphone jack. Is there any hope or can someone explain the
limitation? Anyone know how it worked before?

I've seen a number of threads and never really heard the official
reason this support was removed.
