Now I'm confused :-) > I have Chime currently installed and it works fine in Netscape. > Currently neither Explorer or Mozilla handle .pdb files. IE will work fine. All you have to do is install the Chime plug-in for IE
There is no Chime plug-in for Mozilla. Why do you want to access .pdb files through a web page? Do you have existing web pages that you want to view? > I want to be able to install Jmol without corrupting the > interaction between Netscape and Chime. You say 'install Jmol'. I think that means there is something fundamental which you are missing. The Jmol application does nothing with mime-types. So it is not going to interfere with anything that is going on between Netscape and Chime. The JmolApplet is something that you insert into a web page when you are designing a page where you want to display molecules. But mime-types are not involved. > I'm the person behind the curtain [EMAIL PROTECTED] project and I'd like > to be able to compare Chime and Jmol (and perhaps RASMOL) side-by-side > on the same nanoparts without having to constantly change > mime types or other configuration parameters. You shouldn't have to do anything. Why do you want to use a web browser anyway. Just run the RasMol application and the Jmol application. They are completely independent, don't have anything to do with mime-types, and will not interfere with each other. (Given that you are working on [EMAIL PROTECTED], you want to be running the cvs HEAD version of Jmol, not the officially released version.) >> Are you saying that you would *rather* use Chime than Jmol? >> Why on earth would you want to do such a thing?! >> Heaven forbid! >> ;-) > > Yes, probably so :-) I was actually quite serious. As I understand it, your project does not have any existing web pages with molecular models. By *the server* I mean *the web server*. Otherwise, why would you be using Netscape + Chime? >> The applet doesn't use any mime-types. So no configuration of the >> web-server is necessary. It simple loads the file that is specified in >> the <param> tag. > > It is my understanding that Jmol is in Java and should therefore > work from any browser that supports Java. I'm sorry ... this statement doesn't make any sense to me. Please try to clarify. > Do I just open the .pdb file from within Jmol once it is running? Yes. It is an application just like any other application. Start the application, open a file. The 'Jmol application' doesn't have anything to do with a web browser. > (In which case I should be ok if I > simply start Jmol and open the file -- or is there > some kind of "wrapper" I have to build that points to the PDB file that > gets produced by the server?) There are two things: 1. The Jmol application is a standalone application. 2. The JmolApplet is an applet for embedding in web pages. They share the same core ... but they are used in two different ways. Since you started talking about Chime, I assumed you were talking about the JmolApplet ... which is a Chime substitute. I hope that this has helped.
