Thanks, Bob! I was going to have to write some interesting user documentation
to explain this feature. This particular thing is fairly easy to do with the
user interface for my app.

  Fixed for Jmol 11.8.19 and Jmol 11.9.31. Files for 11.9 will be uploaded soon
to http://chemapps.stolaf.edu/jmol/docs/examples-11/Jmol-11.zip; release of
11.8.19 will be later this week.

    Hmm, yeah, that's a bug... The cheese-puff effect is because you have
defined the size of the cartoon in the range after the specified residues, and
Jmol has removed the helix description for those residues. Basically, if

    10-20 are helixes
    and you display cartoons and then redefine a subset of the structure with

    select *;cartoons on
    structure helix {12-13}

    then 10-11 are one helix, 12-13 are another helix, and 14-20 are no longer
any structure.

    What you are saying is that 14-20 should still be helix. I agree.

    The reason it works with ribbon is because with ribbon all the structures
are the same size. With cartoons you have smaller non-helix, non-strand
sections.

    I'll look into that.
