I always ask an English colleague in the university if a particular
American actor was able to speak in credible British accent, and so far, I
remembered him praising Gwyneth Paltrow in SLIDING DOORS, Julianne Moore in
THE END OF THE AFFAIR.

I like Jeremy Northam ever since he appeared as a villain in the Sandra
Bullock starrer THE NET. However, I take exception with his terrible
Italian accent in THE GOLDEN BOWL -- it sounds so fake and obviously
belabored. The last time I endured a fake accent was Nicolas Cage's in
CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN. Thank God, John Hurt and Christian Bale did not
bother to acquire the accent. In THE GOLDEN BOWL, Anjelica Huston's
character was colorful but she was inconsistent with her British accent,
so's with Uma Thurman.
