With all the different music discussed around here, I'm sure that all of us have at one time or another felt on the outside looking in, either because we don't "get" the particular music/musician being discussed, or maybe have just never heard much or any of it.
I have a really big admission to make. For years now, I've listened to people, especially Paz and Fred Simon, rave on in depth about the miracle and genius of Pat Metheny. I've cringed every time, not at all because I don't like Metheny, but because I just wasn't getting or seeing what they were sharing and I've always held Fred's and Michael's musical sensibilities in the highest regard. Why wasn't I connecting on Metheny?? What component was missing in me? ;-) The most wonderful thing happened to me recently. A few weeks ago I was in the car and suddenly a song came on that instantly stunned and overwhelmed me with its beauty. Big time omigawd. Afterward all that was said was "from Pat Metheny's new album." I felt a rush of bliss - oh yes, maybe now I'm on to it! Then today at work, the same thing happened - another song came on and as I listened thought "AHHH...oh, oh, this is some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard in my life - what is this??!" Again, all that was said was "from Pat Metheny's new album." Oh my. I can't even describe it - it's just one of those things that you know when you hear it - like the first time you heard Joni or Laura. It's a new level, a new invention of music. Wow. The new Metheny "Speaking Of Now" is on its way. And thanks to you all who kept telling me ;-) Kakki NP: Buffalo Springfield - various demos from the boxset
