Hey Colin, glad to hear your trip turned out to be so interesting:) (say hi to John) I'm glad you asked those questions that you did. It got me to thinking about all this (and anyone that knows me can tell you that i **never** understand politics -never ever, i tend to get as confused as you sound!) I read in the paper something about links between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaida. As far as i'd ever known, there isn't really any close connections between them, and it sounded very much like personal opinion passed off as fact; this quite surprised me coming from a so called quality broadsheet. Is there any *real* evidence to support the assertion that he has been connected to al-Qaida?? I know there are many people on this list that follow these issues closer than i do, and there are people on this list that *understand* these things on a level i seem unable to reach. One thing that has been obvious, even to me in my way of oversimplified understanding, is that Hussein does indeed pose an interesting problem/threat. It is almost certain that he already has some of these weaons Colin, it is almost certain that he wants more, and it is almost certain that he has no problems in using them. Before 1998 UN inspectors found evidence that Husseins regime had been producing (developing??) nuclear, chemical and (!) biological weaponry. It may be a small country Colin, but with devices of these sorts at their disposal, they could pack a powerful punch. That was four years ago; it almost doubtless that this production has continued in that time. When world leaders left Hitler alone in the 1930's, he grew stronger. What happens if we leave Hussein alone; problems with Kuwait? Iran? Am i right in thinking there are important consequences for Israel too? Is military action justifiable? Does that mean war? Is a world without war an unattainable ideal? As ever with this type of thing i have more questions than i can (or want to) answer. I only half understand what Blair and Bush advocate as a solution to this issue. I don't know if it's for the best. the only thing i'm sure of is that hardship and bloodshed will follow any action on their behalf. If they aggrevate Hussein into utilising any of those weapons, what then? There are no answers; everyone seems to have an agenda, everyone seems to have an opinion and i can find no straight answers Colin. All i can find is more questions, and more questions, and more questions. GARRET np- The Carpenters, Solitaire
