In the play Party, which a friend of mine wrote, and my cousin starred in in L.A., there is a bitchy discourse about the difference between soundtracks and original Broadway cast albums. It is a hoot! Anyway, here are my Top Ten Desert Island Original Broadway Cast Albums:
1. West Side Story (Don't argue with Bob Muller. He's a Broadway queen from way back) 2. Funny Girl (OBCA surpasses even the great soundtrack) 3. Candide (the original, or any of the revivals) 4. Carousel (the best of Rogers and Hammerstein) 5. Sweeney Todd (Sondheim's masterpiece) 6. Parade (the most underrated musical of our time) 7. Kiss Me Kate (still the freshest and most literate musical of them all) 8. The Lion King (deserves all the praise and rewards it has received) 9. Hair (rocked the foundations of Broadway) 10. Show Boat (the mother of all musicals) Jerry
