Ooh, I'm gonna have to get this CD. Rockin' the Suburbs is one of the best things I've heard in years. Another obvious comparison - to me Zak and Sara brings to mind Scenes from an Italian Restaurant. And Ben's rare gift for melody also reminds me of Billy Joel. And throughout Rockin' the Suburbs he references musical styles from the 70s and 80s - music I loved and grew up on. I just love this disc. And the song Rockin' the Suburbs - talk about dissing popular music. So hilarious. Jenny [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:<first person that popped into my head upon hearing Ben Folds Five was Randy
Newman. That sardonic smart ass wit combined with heart rending poignancy - nothing like Sir Elton, except that he plays the piano.>> I'll buy the Newman comparison, I guess I'm just thinking about the energy level that he pours into his performances. Randy just doesn't pound those rhythms out like Ben & Elton. Plus...listen to Folds' "Zak & Sara" & then listen to Elton's "Teacher I Need You" and you'll see my point. Ultimately, Ben's his own thing which is what makes him so cool. And to hear him "conduct" the audience to become the human horn section for "Army" is one of the musical highlights of the year for me. It's GOT to be very rewarding to know that your songs have been so fully absorbed by the audience... <tickets - of course, that's really because Jackson Browne is the opening act- but I'm looking forward to the show.>> And I'll bet it rocks! Petty's band is rock solid, and he has so much back catalogue that it's guaranteed to be great, and to see Jackson as well is icing on the cake! Bob, who's seeing Victor perform tonight in G-ville! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or privileged material.
